On April 20th the MCAC ERT participated in FEMA’s spring PrepareAthon by presenting the American Red Cross Pillowcase Project to an afterschool program at the Rockcreek Terrace Community Center in Rockville, MD. Newly trained Pillowcase Presenters and MCAC members Pearl Parker and Cindy Douglas, Sorors Pamela Luckett and Jacqueline Dennard with Norma Gamero, Red Cross Regional Community Preparedness Manager presented a fun and engaging program.
The Pillowcase Project, sponsored by Disney, is an emergency preparedness education program for grades 3 – 5 that teaches students about personal and family preparedness. This includes safety skills, local hazards, and basic coping skills. Red Cross volunteers lead students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness and survival skills. Upon completion, students receive a sturdy pillowcase in which to build their personal emergency supply kits.
